be fair

In bedtime stories our parents used to read to us, when the fox eats sheep, we used to tell kids that the fox is wicked and black hearted for eating poor sheep. Then we convince the kids to eat meat.”yalla ya 7abeby kol hmm 3shan tekbar”. Why we aren't wicked black hearted people, don't we eat sheep too?

So when we eat meat we are not wicked and that is good for us, but when fox eat meat they are wicked! (Taking in consideration that we have many other things to eat that fox don't have, they won't eat rice or vegetables!) I'm not discussing the matter that God created sheep for us to eat, I know that. I just wonder about how we see things from two perspectives, a general one and a special one when the matter becomes related to us, and here are some examples that most of us do in our daily life:

When we cross the street, we shout at the car owners to slow down, Man3adeesh el share3 y3ny?! We don't have to run and this is a street, ENTA MSH RAKEB TAYARA!
(I heard this particular phrase when i was in my dad car once from a group of dumb people who were trying to cross the Autostrade from a very wise point, Matla3 el kobry!)
But when we drive our cars we shout at the pedestrians to cross the streets faster, ENTA MSH MAASHY 3Al COURNICHE!!!

When anyone crashes into another car, it is impossible for him to admit that it was his mistake although he/she (and it is mostly her) may have no driving license at all! (aw tal3a b el kosa w el wasta zay ma kol el-nas tala3oha , mn 3’eer ay driving test asln).

When we want to drive through “medaan” or “takato3” with our cars, we always think that we have the priority to cross, and the rest of cars should wait for us.
And this lead to a very good rule, the one who doesn’t care more about his ride will cross first. As example: my dad drives (mitsubishi lanser , so if a BMW driver and him were trying to cross, dad will cross first! Cuz his car is cheaper to fix if it was hit. On the other hand, if he tried to cross and the other driver was driving a LADA or an old FIAT, of course he’ll cross first, or he will regret it!

Your father can smoke, but you can’t because it’s dangerous for your health!! As if lung cancer can’t affect fathers!

When you want to sell something, you try to sell it for the highest price you can get, and you try to prove to the buyer that it is better than new!
When you want to buy something, you try to get it for the lowest price you can negotiate for, and you’ll convince the seller that it is a piece of crap and you’re buying it just to help him!!

There are LOADS of other situations, da ely ana fakro now! So this proves that we aren’t fair at all!
Why don’t we just play fair? Leeh el ta3lab byb2a makaar 3shan byakol el 5erfaan w e7na lazm nakol 5erfaan 3shan nekbar?! It’s double standards.

Dear depression:
I know we have been together for a long time
I understand that you must be there in my life from time to time; but I'm kindly asking you for a break … would it you please understand why I need a break? Because
EVERY TIME I HAVE A GOOD TIME  YOU hit me again …. You hit me again Depression. ..And why? Is two days too much for me>? I just wanna have some peace. ..To be able to smile for days...to enjoy the blue sky and my favorite season … to enjoy the rain...to enjoy every drop of it!!
The weird thing is that I'm very optimistic person … I love hope faith and light …so why you keep hitting me like you can't find someone else? I have learned a lot about life but what still freak me out , I will admit what I didn’t learn yet … my mistakes … loving too much …forgiving too easy… trusting too quickly and expect the same from people I think I will stick with the quote " give more and … expect less "
Regardless that I believe that forgiveness is the most powerful thing anyone can do and not everyone is able to do such a thing … its very hard extremely hard.
I never figured out why I suffer this much?? Do I choose the wrong people in my life??
No I have lot of great friends and I love every single one of them then why suddenly everything is a mess!! Such a mess
So please give me a chance to fix my life ...to breathe …I wanna stand on my feet again
My dearest depression … please accept my request
….
Your favorite person.

There's a hadith, or saying by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that I only recently understood and fell in love with its beauty and the wisdom behind it.

'If the Hour were to occur and you had a seed or a small plant in your hand, (you would plant it) and if your are bale to plant it before that, then plant it (now).'
This is one of my favorite teachings by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) because it perfectly exemplifies the wisdom and divinity of his teachings. Here, the Prophet (pbuh) is reminding people that it does not matter the outcome of ones actions, or the reward one gets from doing something, what matters is the effort one puts into anything and the intention they had. So for example, you put the effort into planting that seed, so even if the Hour occurs, you are still rewarded for the effort you put into planting that seed.

It's not the ends but rather the means.

Even after all this time
the sun never says to the Earth
'you owe me'.
Look what happens
with a love like that,
it lights the whole sky.

- Hafiz
A Persian poet of the 1300's

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;

If I can ease one life the aching,

Or cool one pain,

Or help one fainting robin

Unto his nest again,

I shall not live in vain.

- Emily Dickinson

The Value of Time by Sheikh Hamza Yusuf

Islam is a religion based on revelation that deems the human being nothing less than the vicegerent of God
. The work of the world never ends, and one’s obligations are greater than the time allotted to fulfil them. For this reason, Muslim jurists hesitated to condone anything that wasted one’s time without benefit, other than acts that the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wasalam) had clearly said are useful: playing with one’s spouse, spending time with one’s children and family, and engaging in sports that displayed martial valor and character, such as horsemanship, archery, swimming, and swordplay.

Nevertheless, the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wasalam) enjoyed life and encouraged others to do so. During festive times, such as holidays and wedding ceremonies, he (saw) encouraged entertainment, including singing. According to Imam al-Bukhari (ra) in his al-Tareekh, the Prophet’s (saw) companions (ra) once had a food-fight with the leftover rinds of watermelon. The Prophet (saw) also witnessed a food-fight among the womenfolk of his household and laughed heartily. He (saw) listened to his companions talk about their silliness before Islam and to their stories about the foolish things they did without reason and would laugh until his molars showed. He (saw) joked but always told the truth. He (saw) was not a prude, nor was he a puritan who did not appreciate human weakness and folly. Far from fanaticism, he (saw) despised extremism and zealotry, and loved gentleness and compassion, even with his enemies.

He (Sallallahu alayhi wasalam) was a lion on the battlefield, but once the battle was over and the day won, he showed immense magnanimity that overwhelmed even his worst enemies. He (saw) took life seriously and warned us not to spend our lives in vain pursuits. He reminded us that while laughter has its place, it should not become such a central part of our lives that we fail to recognize the gravity of life and the misery in which many less fortunate people live. He (saw) smiled much of the time and hence was called “the smiling one”. He (saw) said, “To smile in the face of your brother is charity.”

The Prophet’s (Sallallahu alayhi wasalam) statements about such things as playing backgammon reflect his seriousness and concern for his community. He (saw) reminded us that, “Most of humanity cheat themselves of two precious things: good health and leisure.” Leisure in Arabic is faragh, which means “emptiness.” It is the time one is free of preoccupation. Most of us fill that time with trivial pursuits, such as watching television, listening to music, playing games, and engaging in empty chatter. Before we know it, our lives are gone. Our seconds become minutes, our minute’s hours, our hour’s days, and our day’s years, until suddenly we find that our lives are over, and what have we accomplished?

“By time, surely humanity is in loss except those who believe and do good works, and enjoin each other to the truth and to patience.”

This Surah reminds us that time is our treasure - each minute is irreplaceable, and either we invest it in the next life or squander it here in an inevitable progression toward spiritual bankruptcy. The scholars of the past, more than others, understood the precious value of time.

Islam is not a harsh religion, nor a religion that deprives people of enjoyment, but it is a religion that demands a level of seriousness, commitment, and concern with the human condition. We should use our time to better ourselves and improve conditions for others, and this does not exclude utilizing our time for recreation and renewal. We all need “downtime time” to relax and restore ourselves for the challenges of life and the preparation for the next life. Games, recreation, fun, folly, silliness, and vacations all have their place in our lives, but the tragedy occurs when those activities become the purpose of our lives, and the true purpose of life is entirely missed. Our efforts are directed towards recreation: we work to play, believing that the week is only an excuse for the weekend.

The world is filled with people who are “killing time,” completely unaware that time is actually killing us. One day, we will wake up and have to face our lives in their entirety. According to Imam al-Awzai (d. 157/774), everyone will watch their lives from start to finish on the Day of Judgment. No one will be allowed to interrupt to edit or to explain. What we watch will simply be a rerun of our entire lives, yet this time around, we will be painfully aware of the meaning that eluded us the first time because we were not paying attention.

If playing chess once concerned the scholars of Islam, what would they say to us today about our habits of watching television, channel hopping and films and cinema and playing videogames, about our endless conversations on mobile phones and on-line chatting, or about the hours that we spend surfing the net and reading empty blogs written by people with little to say and less to do? Our scholars’ concern was our salvation and well-being, and while Muslims today may see them as zealous or fanatics, on the Day the Debts fall due and we are taken to account for every moment of our lives, those scholars will be seen for the giants they were, and their counsel to us will be a bitter taste of remorse in our mouths.

We were both young when I first saw you.
I close my eyes, and the flashback starts,
I'm standing there,
On the balcony in summer air.

I see the lights, see the party, the ballgowns.
See you make your way through the crowd,
And say, "Hello",
Little did I know,

That you were Romeo,
You were throwing pebbles,
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet."
And I was crying on the staircase,
Begging you, "Please don't go".

And I said,
"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone.
I'll be waiting, all that's left to do is run.
You be the prince, and I'll be the princess,
It's a love story, baby, just say, 'yes'."

So I sneak out to the garden to see you,
We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if he knew,
So close your eyes,
Escape this town for a little while.

'Cause you were Romeo,
I was a scarlet letter,
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet."
But you were everything to me,
Begging you, "Please don't go".

And I said,
"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone.
I'll be waiting, all that's left to do is run.
You be the prince, and I'll be the princess,
It's a love story, baby, just say, 'yes'."

"Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel.
This love is difficult, but it's real.
Don't be afraid, we'll make it of this mess,
It's a love story, baby, just say, 'yes'."

Well, I got tired of waiting,
Wondering if you were ever coming around.
My faith in you was fading,
When I met you on the outskirts of town.

And I said,
"Romeo, save me, I've been feeling so alone.
I keep waiting for you, but you never come.
Is this in my head,
I don't know what to think,"

You knelt to the ground,
And pulled out a ring and said,
"Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have to be alone.
I love you, and that's all I really know.
I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress,
It's a love story, baby just say yes."
